'Homecoming' - 'In flanders fields'
‘Homecoming’ and ‘In Flanders Fields’ are both very different poems, using various poetic techniques to represent different aspects of war. The tone of the poems are vastly different; ‘Homecoming’ uses a harsh confronting tone, whilst ‘In Flanders Fields’ comes across as mournful and solemn. This is because the poems were written in very different eras, triggering Crae and Dawe to have different views of war. ‘In Flanders Fields’ was written in World War 1, when society endorsed war, and believed it was an honorable thing, whereas‘Homecoming’ was published during the Vietnam war when civilians and certain political groups were anti-war. The views society had in the era of each poem played a crucial role in the poets representation of war. Throughout age, views society has of war change. This is seen through the poems from the different representations of war written by two different poets. Comparing the two poems, it is further inferred that the views of society craft the representations writers have in their text.
